Do-It-Yourself Websites – Is It Worth It?

In my line of work, I see a lot of small business websites, and it doesn’t take me long to know when someone has built it themselves using one of the free or subscription DIY website builders.

The tell tale signs are usually broken menus, copy, imagery and headings not aligned, broken gallery / carousels or empty boxes where content should be, and it doesn’t usually work on a mobile.

Like most methods of DIY, it sounds like a great money saver at the time, and they are designed to be easy. I wanted to test one to see how easy it was, so I jumped onto Wix, which seems to be popular, and 25 minutes later I had a website. HOWEVER, despite the fact I chose a great free template, and I designed it nicely with good colour choices and good photography – it still did not function how I wanted it to. It was supposed to also work on a mobile – but it just didn’t do it very well at all. Personally, I would not be happy with that.

For people who aren’t as computer literate, it would take a lot longer and perhaps the style of template would not be the most suitable, the photography might not be good quality, and issues on mobile might be missed. I have viewed two websites in the past week that are well below standard, due to the business owner not having the money (or willing to spend money) for a professional to build it.

Seeing the value a professionally built website can bring requires some education on the benefits, and some foresight into the future. These are just some of the benefits:

– A custom web build means you will get exactly what you want, designed to your specifications and requirements. If, like a lot of new business owners, you’re not sure what works best, a professional online marketer will use their experience to help you make decisions.

– Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) should be taken care of allowing your business to be found on Google. SEO is a must have.

– Going forward, it will require little maintenance providing the developer creates a responsive site with an easy to use Content Management System allowing you to make updates yourself.

Build A Solid Website Build the right foundation, so you can add on later

One of the other key things to remember is if in future you want to refocus the website or add other sections such as an online store, your web developer can build off the existing website to customize it once more. This makes starting out with a reputable developer worth more than the initial investment. You should also be attracting quality customers more rapidly and building on it’s success as your business grows.

Technology and innovation is constantly evolving in our lives and the way we shop, so if you do employ a web design and development company, the added benefit that most people don’t see is that you’ll be kept up-to-date with new trends and ways to implement and evolve your online marketing, leaving you to do what you do best – manage and grow your business!
