The wait is finally over for Australian online retail businesses – shopping on Instagram is here!

If you sell physical products, have a Facebook business page with a Shop enabled, and a business Instagram account, then you can now tag your products on your Instagram account. This enables your followers to tap on your product within an image on Instagram to go directly to your shop to make a purchase.

Figures shared by companies who were selected last year in the US have reported an increase in traffic to their store, and attributed sales directly from the tagged product images.

If you currently have a WordPress site with WooCommerce, then you too can take advantage of the Shopping on Instagram feature. To understand how to get your business set up, read through what you need and/or the steps you need to take.

How do I set up Instagram shopping for my business?

The answer to this depends on what you currently have. Let’s look at a few possible scenarios.

Start with these basic set up questions:

1. Do you sell physical products (not virtual or service based)? If the answer is yes, then you can proceed to the next question.

2. Do you have a Facebook Business Page? If yes, also make sure you have a Business Manager account that owns your Facebook Page and is linked to your Instagram business account. You also need to be Admin of the Business Page.

3. Do you have an Instagram Business account? You need to have a business account on Instagram, not a personal account to enable shopping.

If you don’t have a business Instagram account, convert it by doing the following:
a) Tap the Setting icon from your Instagram profile
b) Tap on Switch to Business Profile
c) Select your Facebook page
d) Make sure your business details are on your business profile and tap Done

So there are the first set of questions out of the way! Next we look at what other ecommerce platforms you might have.

What ecommerce platforms do you currently use:

1. Do you have a WooCommerce based website? If yes, read on to the next section.

2. Do you have a Shopify or BigCommerce based website? If yes, add your Facebook Shop through your platform, and make sure it’s the same account connected to your Instagram business account.

3. Do you NOT have an ecommerce website at all, or one that isn’t compatible with integration (i.e. Etsy)? If yes, not to worry, you still can set up a Shop on Facebook and link it to Instagram independently.

To those on Shopify or BigCommerce, you should be able to enable the shopping on Instagram feature having identified yourself with the above steps, and using those platforms to finish your setup.

For those with WooCommerce or no existing store at all, follow on below.

How to set up a Shop on Facebook using your WooCommerce store

You need to download the Facebook for WooCommerce plugin, which will connect your WooCommerce store to create a Shop tab on your Facebook Business Page.

This will pull in and sync your product information into your Facebook Shop, so you will carry on updating and managing your WooCommerce products as normal. The products tagged on Instagram will take your customers through to your WooCommerce store.

How to set up a Shop on Facebook using your Facebook Business Manager account

This is for business owners who don’t use a compatible ecommerce store or don’t have a store at all, but are set up with a Facebook Business Page and Instagram Business account.

What you need to do is set up a catalogue and add products to the catalogue from your Facebook Business Manager account. Your Facebook Shop will sit independently on Facebook and be managed by you from there.

For all the steps involved with this, visit the official Facebook Business page which guides you through it and has links to additional help should you need it.

Let’s start Shopping with Instagram!

If you’ve set yourself up following the relevant guides above, you need to make sure your account is approved by Instagram for shopping. From what I’ve been hearing, it can take up to a week, for others it’s enabled straight away. You should be notified by Instagram when you are approved.

Enable product tagging on Instagram

To enable product tagging from your Instagram account, tap on your Profile, Get Started alert or Settings icon, tap Shopping, tap Continue, select a product catalogue to connect your business profile, and tap Done.

If you’re good to go, you simply need to select your photo, add your caption/effects/hashtags etc., then tap the products in the photo that you want to tag. Enter the names of the products you want to tag and select them as they appear in the drop down list. Tap Done, tap Share.

You can also tag existing photos, so if you have a gorgeously shot product image that is getting a lot of engagement, don’t miss the opportunity to send your followers directly to your cart to purchase. Users can see which posts are shoppable as the shopping cart icon will be visible on the image. You can tag 5 products in one photo, or up to 20 across a multi photo post.

Hi I have done all of the above and only 9 products show in instagram. I have 125 in my FB shop from Woocommerce. Help! Thanks

    • Hi Betzer – if you want, email me (louise@divinedigital.com.au) your Facebook shop and Insta links and I can take a look? Have you tried re-syncing your FB shop in WooCommerce? Are any of the products on your FB shop pending or not approved? Only you as the admin of your page would be able to see that. I'm just throwing suggestions at the moment without seeing it! 🙂
